Balloon Fiesta
The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is a free annual gathering of hot-air balloons held each August at Ashton Court Estate, with mass ascents at dawn and in the evening. First held in 1979, it is one of the largest events of its kind in Europe.
In practice
Over several days, dozens of balloons take off together when the weather allows, drifting over the city, the Avon Gorge and the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Evening "night glows" light the tethered balloons in time to music. Ascents depend on wind and weather, and the organisers announce each flight on the day. Entry to the site is free, with charges for parking.
Why it matters to newcomers
The Balloon Fiesta is Bristol's best-loved summer event, and balloons over the city on an August morning are a sight people talk about. You do not need to go to Ashton Court to see them: many Bristolians watch from their gardens, the Downs or Clifton.
