Gloucester Road
Gloucester Road is a long high street in north Bristol famous for its independent shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants, often said to be one of the longest stretches of independent retailers in Britain. It runs north from Stokes Croft through Montpelier, St Andrews and Bishopston as part of the A38.
In practice
Along its length are greengrocers, bakeries, butchers, bookshops, record shops, vintage stores, bars and restaurants, with relatively few national chains. Local traders and residents have campaigned to keep it that way, and Bristol's support for local businesses is part of the road's identity. It is also a busy bus route and a main road into the city, so expect traffic.
Why it matters to newcomers
Gloucester Road and the residential streets around it, such as Bishopston and St Andrews, are popular with young professionals and families. Weekend mornings on "Glos Road" - coffee, market shopping and a walk to St Andrews Park - are a Bristol ritual.
